| | Bar Lighting
Having a pool table or wet bar in your recreation room is a great way to bring entertainment and function to the space. Bar lighting is essential to help create the perfect ambiance and imbue the space with warmth and vitality. Of course not all light fixtures are created equal and while the right ones will dramatically enhance the look or feel of the space—the wrong ones create a sense of disharmony and may literally diminish the entire experience. As with any space you wish to illuminate properly and enhance the aesthetics, the key is have a balanced illumination scheme with all three major types of interior lighting represented, including:
· Ambient · Task · Accent
The overall illumination in any space is known as the ambient lighting and a home bar often features bar lighting fixtures directly over the serving area. However, unless the recreation room is comprised solely of the bar, you will have a transition area between the varying spaces. Architecturally, changes in height typically help set off or define different features in the same space (for instance, a sunken area is typically used in many restaurants as the bar space because it is self-enclosed and easily distinguished from the elevated dining area).
If your recreation room or special area does not have any sunken areas or readily distinguishable architectural features, then you will want to help define the space with lighting. Focused or directed lighting is one of the simplest ways to help distinguish special areas within the same space and pendants or mini pendants are common fixtures used for this purpose—especially when it comes to bars.
If you have a pub table in the bar area, try mounting an accentuating mini-pendant above to provide additional illumination while enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of the space. You can also accomplish a stunning visual effect over the bar itself by installing mini pendant lighting above each bar stool thus adding balance to the lighting scheme while complementing the ambient fixtures illuminating the serving area.
Light fixtures themselves are not always the best way to add some illumination and decorative flair to your bar area. Indirect lighting, such as that created by a mirror, is a common feature in many bars and restaurants and can help the space seem larger. Mirrors are typically found directly behind the serving area but be sure that your pendants and other light fixtures are placed properly or they will create glare and discomfort when the illumination is bounced off of the mirror.
Illuminating your bar is not difficult but it does require some coordination and planning. Remember to use multiple light sources (such as the recessed ceiling fixtures for the ambient illumination) to help spread the illumination and be sure to illuminate pub tables and perhaps even the bar stools themselves with subtly diffused task illumination created by a pendant or mini-pendant. Then, with proper placement of mirrors, you can generate a relaxing ambiance in your own personal bar and become the envy of friends and family alike.
