Billiard Lights and Pool Table Lights

Far too many of us take billiard lighting for granted and mistakenly believe that any old ceiling fixture will be adequate to illuminate the playing surface.  However, as with any task or work activity, you will need focused or directed illumination in addition to the ambient lighting typically provided by flush-mount or semi-flush ceiling fixtures.  Not only will this better illuminate the playing surface and potentially elevate play, it will also add balance and subtle sophistication to the entire surrounding decor.  But when it comes to billiard table lighting, what really is the best option for your home and surrounding furnishings?

There is a big difference between direct and indirect lighting fixtures.  Any task or activity like playing pool which necessitates the use of additional lighting will require direct illumination. Now this does not necessarily mean that you want a spotlight over the pool table but you do want to directly illuminate the playing surface without adding glare or causing eye strain.

Pendants or hanging lamps are perhaps the traditional and most common pool table lights available.  Because pool tables are long and narrow,  billiard lights also needs to conform to these basic design parameters.  Ideally, you would like to use a billiard lamp that matched the entire length of the table.  However, for those with pool tables that are 8 feet long, this may not be possible.

If it simply is not possible to have such a large light fixture for the pool table, then you can opt to use a smaller pool table light.  However, make sure that the fixture is centered over the table perfectly.  Pool is a game of angles so you want to make sure that you can clearly see the corner pockets.  Any shadows caused by small fixtures will affect game play and possibly create a gloomy atmosphere.

Downlight pendants, hanging lamps, and specially crafted billiard & island lighting fixtures are all great for illuminating a pool table because they direct illumination downward directly onto the playing surface.  However, as with any light fixtures, you definitely want them to accentuate the surrounding furnishings so that the entire décor is unified into a cohesive interior design scheme.  Pay special attention to the design style of the house itself, the color scheme, and the surrounding furniture when choosing complementary fixtures for the space.

A downlight pendant or any billiard light alone will not be sufficient to illuminate your entire recreation room.  A layered lighting scheme where the illumination is supplied by more than one fixture is essential to creating a balanced and warm atmosphere.  Particularly in game or recreation rooms, the use of complementary wall sconces, table lamps, and other lighting fixtures made in the same style and design as the billiard light are perfect for imbuing the space with ambiance and decorative flair.

Billiard lighting options abound so there are plenty of options to choose from when illuminating your pool table.  Just make sure to anchor the lighting scheme with a billiard lamp featuring downlight illumination (like a pendant or hanging lamp).  Then, complement this primary fixture with wall sconces, lamps, and other fixtures to add depth and character to the space while balancing the lighting scheme.
