Foyer Lighting Product Guide

It really does boil down to foyer lighting as being the most critical when trying to make a good impression to those who visit your home. When illuminated properly, the entryway should be warm and inviting. However, if poorly lit or featuring fixtures that create glare, the foyer can literally make the entrance to your home feel more like an FBI interrogation room than a place people are happy to visit. But what are the best ways to add beauty and illumination to your foyer while complementing your existing décor and interior design scheme?

Ceiling Height

The actual height of your ceiling will play a huge role in determining the best light fixture for the foyer. If you happen to have a low ceiling in your entranceway, then you will want a fixture that bounces light upwards. Inverted pendants are perfect for a foyer with a low ceiling and the indirect light will help make the space feel larger and more inviting.

If your entryway has an exceptionally high or vaulted ceiling, then you will want a light fixture that directs more of the illumination downward to avoid dark spots in the space. There will still be some ambient lighting for the space but it is not critical to fully illuminate the ceiling. In fact, depending on the actual dimensions of the space, use of a downlight pendant or hanging lamp should create an intriguing and decorative display of shadows at the top of the room while still flooding the space below with ample illumination.

The transition from the outdoors into the interior of your home can lead to disorientation especially when there are problems with glare. It is typically a good idea to use a wall mirror in the foyer to help brighten the space but be careful during placement. Be prepared to make several adjustments before deciding upon a spot that helps brighten the space without causing glare off of the downlight pendant.

Like any space in your home, you will want to make sure that your primary foyer fixture is complemented with some alternative source of actual illumination. If the entryway is long and narrow, try adorning the short wall with a wall sconce or two to help create the illusion of a more balanced space. Plus, by spreading the illumination between other light fixtures, you can enhance the unity of the space while also creating accent lighting options that can completely redefine the look and feel of the space when the primary pendant is not in use.

Foyer lights really establish the first impression that people have of your home and décor. Inverted pendants are great for short ceilings and will help make the space seem larger while downlight versions tend to work better for vaulted or high ceilings. Just take care to complement the ceiling fixtures with accentuating wall sconces or small table lamps made in the same style to unify the space and enhance the decorative effect.
