Kitchen Island Lighting Product Guide

We may love the added work space or prep area but sometimes the prospect of finding the best kitchen island lighting can seem a bit daunting. However, when a light fixture accentuates and illuminates and island area properly, the entire décor is enhanced while still creating a special area all unto itself. As with any light fixture for just about any space, the search begins by first looking at the surrounding décor and design style.

A properly coordinated interior design scheme is one in which the decorative features, furniture, and light fixtures all accentuate and complement one another. For instance, a classic Victorian home looks best when the furnishings are traditional and feature elegant detail and quality craftsmanship. A Tiffany or classic Victorian style hanging lamp would be excellent lighting choices for a kitchen island or reading nook.

For more contemporary homes, the furniture and light fixtures tend to feature simpler lines, monochromatic or dual color schemes, and a clearer blending of the functional and aesthetic. Contemporary pendants tend to feature metallic accents and bases finished in chrome, brass, or stainless steel with shades ranging widely in style and aesthetics. It is common to see 2 and 3 pendant arrangements used in modern design schemes with them used as accent lamps when the primary ambient fixture is not in use.

From traditional to contemporary and everything in between, the style of the home itself will greatly influence the choice of furniture and light fixtures. If you are completely remodeling the kitchen and giving it a complete makeover with all the trimmings and can buy appliances and furniture from scratch—you will clearly have more freedom when choosing the style and design of the lighting fixtures. However, when such an ideal arrangement is not possible, you will have to take into account your home, the surrounding furnishings, and the kitchen island itself when choosing the best fixtures to illuminate the area.

Because a kitchen island is commonly used to complete tasks, prepare meals, and complete any assortment of activities, it is very important to make sure the space is well illuminated. While inverted pendants are great for making a space seem larger or flooding the area with warmly diffused ambient illumination, they are not ideal for any area that requires enough lighting for tasks.

Downlight pendants highlight and direct illumination directly onto the work space below and are ideal for kitchen islands and other work spaces. As with the inverted variety, multiple pendants can be used to create a more dazzling decorative effect while also being available to serve as accent light fixtures when the central ceiling fixture is off. Available in a dizzying arrays of styles, designs, and materials, you are sure to find the perfect island lighting that will accentuate the surrounding décor with beauty and style.
