General Tips on Pendant Lighting

Some of us tend to overlook pendant lighting as a viable option for illuminating a space because of the vast popularity of flush and semi-flush ceiling fixtures. However, the use of pendant light fixtures for kitchen islands, desks, reading nooks, and any work space is a great way to add ample task illumination while beautifying the area as well. Like any light fixture, the pendant comes in a wide array of styles, sizes, and options making it necessary to do a little homework before making a purchase.

After deciding upon the space you wish to illuminate with additional task lighting, it is important to choose between the inverted and downlight varieties of pendant fixtures. Inverted pendants are made so that the lamps face upwards towards the ceiling and thus bathe the surroundings with glare-free indirect illumination. Inverted pendants are great ceiling fixtures that provide subtly diffused ambient lighting but are not the best options when thinking about spaces that require task illumination specifically.

Reading areas, game tables, pool tables, and any work spaces where you might need more illumination are better suited for downlight pendants. As the name implies, these straightforward light fixtures project the illumination downward towards the kitchen island, desk, pool table, or work space. Although downlight pendant lighting does produce some ambient illumination, they are more commonly used to supplement an existing lighting scheme with task illumination.

Small reading nooks and other cozy spots can be beautified and illuminated with smaller versions of these classic fixtures known as mini-pendants. Unlike their larger counterparts, mini-pendants have a single bulb and are ideally suited for adding 40-60 Watts of additional illumination to a small area. However, you can boost the illumination and decorative effect by adorning a space with multiple mini-pendants made in the same style and using the same materials so they create a unified look.

Whether looking to bring a sense of regal sophistication and style to your living room or simply wanting to illuminate your new kitchen island properly, pendant lights make the perfect complement to any décor and interior design scheme. Inverted pendants are perfect for imbuing the room with glare-free ambient illumination while downlight pendants and mini-pendants are better suited for adding task lighting and illuminating work spaces. As with any lighting fixtures, it is important that the pendants complement and accentuate the home itself, the surrounding décor, and the other fixtures in the space.

Finally, no single light fixture is sufficient to illuminate an entire space. Pendants need to be complemented with table lamps, wall sconces, and other light sources. Not only does this enhance the decorative effect, but it also adds balance to the lighting scheme while eliminating dark spots and other problems associated with using a single fixture. Typically speaking (unless using a sufficient inverted fixture), a pendant is used for illuminating work spaces and therefore complement the ambient illumination usually supplied by a flush-mount or semi-flush ceiling fixture or chandelier.
